WALLINGTON
The name "Wallington" derives from the Anglo Saxon " Waletone", meaning "village of the Britons". Parks in the Wallington area include Mellows Park, Beddington Park and the Grange Gardens. Beddington Park is nearly 100 acres in size It was originally part of the Deer Park attached to Carew Manor, a grand country house built in the Tudor period, which stands to this day.
LAVENDER FIELDS
Lavender and herb growing were very prominent in the area in Victorian times and much earlier, and extensive fields of lavender were to be seen in the Carshalton, Beddington, Mitcham and Wallington areas. There are two historic lavender fields still in Carshalton, one at Oaks Way, Carshalton Beeches, the other, a 25-acre commercial site in Croydon Lane called Mayfield and is popular with tourists. This area was once famous as the Lavender Capital of the World.
ST HELIER ESTATE
The estate was built between 1928 and 1936. The area had previously consisted largely of lavender fields. The roads are named in alphabetical order after Monasteries and Abbeys starting in the north-west with Aberconway Road and ending with Woburn Road in the south-east. St Helier Hospital was opened in 1938. John Major, UK Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997, was born there.
